|I printed this chart from the Kits and
Parts dot com web site. I compared it to
another chart by a well known qrper
WA8MCQ..both these charts can be easily
found by web search and they seem to
be the same. I did not find a chart for the
-77 material and some of the other less
common values I have around. Perhaps I
will have to resort to math and use the
amidon chart I have to calculate
according to the Al values.
The two types of toroids I am measuring
today are the 43 mix and the 61 mix.
Both materials look identical. I doubt you
could tell the difference between them
I tried measuring the resistance across
the cores to see if that would give any
clues..but I did not get any stable
|TWO different cores both claiming to be -43 material. NOTE there is a slight difference in the measurements. The chart calls for 15.1 uh for 6 turns.
I did not absolutely and carefully wind these coils. I wound them with "about" the same amount of (TAG END) lead length..a bit over 1 inch. I could have been
more careful and wound two separate coils and made sure the spacing between the turns was the same and the positioning on the core was the same ect..
but..I am just trying this to make sure the cores are -43 material as the supplier stated they were. SEEMS CLOSE ENOUGH FOR GOVERNMENT WORK AS THEY
SAY. FOR AMATEUR RADIO PROJECTS..I WOULD BE CONFIDENT IN THESE CORES. I have bought cores over the years from about 4 different suppliers
including Micro metals and Amidon. Amidon used to the the main supplier back in the 70s but now with the internet and so many qrp people with their web
sites and all their projects..many people..(including me) sell parts. I sell in limited quantities though.
|I'll be doing some more measuring of different Ferrites as well over the next few
days and I will be writing and taking pictures and posting them here.
|Just a note about the type 72 ferrite cores used in the
wattmeter - apparently Amidon doesn't sell that type
___ NOTE: I have bought some 37-77 cores due to
people asking me for them - I ordered 30 this time. I
can order more if there is a demand.
I BOUGHT THEM FROM PALOMAR down in USA.
They are ham friendly and take pay pal (which I
use almost all the time) - I emailed them..and a ham
with a 6 call wrote me back. Nice people!
MY PRICE ON FT37-77 is a bit high due to the
cost to me to buy them and ship them.. $1.40
A couple of us here are looking at type 77 as a
replacement. I built
up the coupler for the wattmeter and attached coax
connectors at the
two "diode" ports... preliminary sweep results look
good for using
type 77 as a replacement for type 72
"found this note on either the QRP-L reflector or
somewhere else on the web"...I have not built the
W7EL wattmeter YET ..de earl ve3ab.
|Later (1995) ARRL Handbooks specify the type 77 for this project.

|I use a 6 turn winding and use this chart as my 'GUIDE'.
Lately Ive tried a 2.5 turn winding for certain
|The w7EL wattmeter is a good linear scale meter. I have the parts here to
build one and I have extra CA3160AE chips and several -77 cores I can
sell. The CA3160ae chips are a bit hard to source and I sell them
cheaper than any ebay seller..with economy postage to boot.
|Do you have broken/stuck ferrite cores for slug tuned coils or other broken ferrites and powered iron cores. I
can measure them here and I keep a whole whack of ferrite slugs and I can match one or more up as a service. I
charge only a few bucks for doing this. -- My $10 per hour bench rate makes it worth while to send items back
and forth "MAIL ORDER business service" In CANADA small slugs for coils can be sent letter mail for $2.00
across Canada. USA padded envelope of parts $4.00
OVERSEAS: I will mail stuff anywhere..but if someone steals the order..or it gets lost.. I dont guarantee it. There
are no tracking numbers or insurance with economy class. - note: NO LOST ORDERS YET!! since 2005!
|Above..my own homebrew end fed 1/2 wave matchbox for 10 meters..based upon the PAR end fed
mono band matchbox. - UGLY -- BUT IT WORKS!!!!
I used an enamelled wire coil (taken from a radio shack blister pack of coils). This matchbox worked
very well and I plan to use it with a 33 ft vertical (will be like a 2 wavelength end fed antenna)..and
should work. I could have just as easily used a T80-6 toroid core. (would be good for 100 watts at
least.) -- I scaled the data I had (taken off the web) for a 20 meter matchbox and used 1/2 the values
(maybe a little less than 1/2 for the coil..because I figured the leads inside the matchbox were a bit
long..and I wanted to account for that). Here is a link to my Par end fed 10-20-40 antenna. I have
more end fed half wave click here for info on the end fed half wave..par style antenna.
|The LC network pictured right ..was
wound and built for 20 meters.
Someone actually cut one of the PAR end
fed matchboxes in half and posted the
details and photos of the innards on line.
I think it was pictured on FLICKR.
Anyways..I picked up the photos and
pictures and I started making my own
Knock off versions for my own
Currently up on the tower..at my home
QTH..I have a PAR 20 meter 300 watt end
fed antenna and the PAR 10-20-40 ..which
works well too but is only 25 watts.
|MY HOMEBREW END FED
ANTENNA NETWORKS ..
I actually use PAR EF-20H
up on the tower and get very
good signal reports and sloping in
the opposite direction I use the
PAR EF-40-20-10. - My
homebrew effort is not nearly as
streamlined and rugged as the
PAR commercial antennas.
|ITS NO SECRET.. I BUY MY CORES FROM THE TOROID KING
One order I did not long ago... here shown to the left
pictured. Costs $20.35 in this case for postage and there is a
small handling charge in their as well. So I have to mark
things up a bit to make a wee slim profit. BUT.. THAT is offset
nicely by the fact that I dont charge much for shipping (small
orders - and I dont charge handling).
W8DIZ operates kits and parts dot com.
NOW>> where I come into the picture is small wee orders.
ie..you need a few cores to complete a project and dont want
to make up a larger order.
Small cores I can ship by post $2.00 across Canada and $4
across USA and about $6.50 overseas.
SO..DO YOUR COMPARISON PRICING. SOMETIMES for small
orders..I am cheaper to order from.
I DONT have very many larger cores. (update: 15-July -14) I
now have (some I ordered in) SEE THE UPDATED LIST
REASON: SHIPPING COSTS. BIG CORES WEIGH MORE AND
COST MORE TO SHIP.
SMALL CORES I can buy 100 and get them shipped fairly
Some guys have asked me (lately) for T130-2 cores and
T106-2s for end fed antenna matchbox projects.
Due to this demand..I did order some of these in. See the
|$103.45 US dollars for the parts shown to the left.
So what I do is I will add about 25 percent to the total costs in order
to get my money back along with a tiny bit of profit. (Its not much
when it comes to selling cores). Profits from Solid State parts and
ICs can be a little better. I BUY PARTS from other hams/electronics
guys who are getting out of the hobby or are down sizing. Email me
Anyways.. MORAL of the story.. For small orders it sometimes pays
to deal with me and for larger orders..perhaps better to deal with
the supplier directly.
WANT FREE SHIPPING.. MEET ME IN PERSON..I can hand carry you
your order!!! FLEA MARKETS BELOW:
Well..I do set up a table at the following ham radio flea markets:

FT37-77 (-77 MATERIAL) $1.40
for SLUG TUNED
COILS/SLUGS I have a page I
just started click here info
|NOTE ON -77 material. -- windings
with this material will be result in
about twice the inductance of
similar windings on a -43 material
THE STANDARD TEST WINDING I
COMMONLY USE.. (6 TURNS)
pictured above on the -61 material
..only produces close to 2 uh. about
1/7th of what the same turns on a
-43 would be.

I found this company very good for even just my small
order of 30 - FT37-77 cores.
|I have large stocks of smaller (less than one inch diameter
cores) but the larger cores cost quite a bit to SHIP UP HERE
TO CANADA. BEST: go to kits and parts dot com for larger
orders and/or large cores. I can handle smaller orders mainly.
|I do a spot test on the incomming Ferrite cores. I keep them in shelves in
their original bags and sell small amounts here in Canada but also anywhere
else to hobbyists.. students.. tinkerers. ect.. With small orders.. I can save
you significantly on shipping and handling.
I CAN ALSO HAND CARRY TO FLEA MARKETS AND HAM RADIO
PICNICS ECT. I TRAVEL TO OTTAWA AREA FLEA MARKETS MAY
SMITHS FALLS AND EARLY SEPT TO CARP/WEST OTTAWA. Also to the
Manitoulin Island Ham radio club in July.
|NEW TO MY INVENTORY - FT140-77 - I only have 4
right now.. I want to order more in small spurts-- I will
sell at $5 each - I can hand carry to Flea Markets.
I will be ordering more in as time goes on. Postage
will be only about $2 in Canada $4 USA and $6.50
overseas for small orders not over a certain
|Shipping and handling of the cores is
a big part of the costs.
For small orders.. you can order from

|Below: a chart for Palomar cores from the Palomar
|Cores for End Fed antenna networks and baluns. I do have some small amounts of stock and can help you
with very small orders. Useful especially to my fellow CANADIAN hams who want lower postage. I can ship
cores in letter envelopes with some creative packaging!!! - I build these networks for myself from time to
time. I use END FED HALF WAVE ANTENNAs because of the layout of my back yard and as well.. I have had
good reports using them. ---> I just bought the LNR (PAR) new higher power multiband (QUAD band)
matchbox and wire for 40, 20, 15 and 10. -- I WILL be using it on 20 (30mtrs at times with a clip on extension);
17 mtrs with a separate 1/2 wave element and 10 meters. I was so impressed with the 40,20, 10 model I have
upgraded and will be experimenting fall 2014.
|Above.. I tried to CLONE a LNR 40-20-10 matchbox. I used a T130 toroid and a 150 pf
capacitor made from a length of 50 ohm rg58 coax. You can see the capacitor coax
taped to the main coax feedline. This was done Field Day 2014 in my back yard. It
did not work on the 3 bands. Only 20 meters! Back to the drawing board on this
one! I think if it were a ferrite toroid it might have worked?? - NOTE: I went the
easy route now and I bought the new LNR high power (100w) efhw multiband
